What is Apo – A1?
The test in which the main protein component is responsible for the transportation and metabolism of lipids. This protein is a component of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as good cholesterol. It helps to measure the amount of apolipoprotein A1 present in the blood. The test is used to diagnose the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. The function of HDL is to remove excess cholesterol present inside the cells transporting it to the liver for further metabolism. Deficiency of apolipoprotein A1 increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The normal range of apolipoprotein A1 is 180 mg/dL in males while 110 to 205 mg/dL in females. Why is Apo – A1 done?
The test is required to assess the ApoA1 level in the blood if low HDL- Cholesterol is detected and thereby determines the risk of a myocardial infarction. The test is recommended if the individual has high triglycerides and cholesterol levels or has a family history of cardiovascular diseases. The test is also used for monitoring the lipid treatment effectiveness.
